Railroad track along way of old SCRR in process of demolition E of Aiken, SC

Actually, much more than traces are visible since most of the way was in service as recently as ten years ago. Long earthen causeways, relics of the original trestles built under the direction of Horatio Allen, are easily seen all along US Route 78, through the middle of main streets in the small railroad towns, and in Aiken's Hitchcock Woods. Even the original 1833 terminus in Hamburg is still visible as a long embankment raised perhaps four feet high. Very little has been done with the abandoned way, it remains largely unimpeded and an acquaintance claimed to have walked the entire length.
