![]() Reproduction of Early SCRR Track at Augusta's RiverwalkOn the recommendation of the Chief Engineer, Horatio Allen, this pile construction was widely used to span swamps and uneven ground without expensive earthmoving. While they soon required replacement by earthen embankments and heavier "T" rails, these continuous trestles served their purpose in quickly establishing full commercial service. Much mileage of this trestle undoubtedly still exists, buried under several feet of earth. Discoveries have been made within the last 50 years at Graniteville (during road construction), Augusta Concrete Block in "Hamburg" (sewer line construction), and Hitchcock Woods in Aiken (washout of the causeway at Cathedral Aisle bridle trail). |
